Dartmouth High Music: Who We Are...

Dartmouth High has a school population of 1100 students, and about 150 students are enrolled in music courses. We offer instrumental music in grades ten through twelve. Students perform in two concert bands, small ensembles, improv groups, and solo settings. Performances take place in a variety of locations, from formal concerts at the school, to road shows around the city, seniors' homes, local music festivals, outdoors, even the Dartmouth/Halifax Ferry. DHS Music is about excellence and innovation. We believe in getting out into the community to perform for those who support us so well.

Of course, no aspect of the Dartmouth High School Music Program would be possible without the teachers.  Ms. Ruth Dowden will be working with both the Grade 10 and the Grade 11/12 Concert Bands.  Mr. Terry Hill runs the Jazz Improv Group.

What have we done besides the usual concerts and performances?

1998-1999 Grade 12 students composed an original multi-movement work for concert band. It was then recorded at the Sir James Dunn Theatre for a CBC Radio 2 network broadcast.

Grade 11/12 Concert Band performed a benefit concert in Liverpool for the Astor Theatre.

“Pidgin”, the story of the tragic end to a little bird, an original composition written by grade 12 students, is performed at the Cohn Auditorium for the Kiwanis Festival, and later for a gathering of metro Halifax music teachers.

The Dartmouth High Band's Spring Tour goes to New York! We received “Excellent Gold” rating and an invitation to be one of 16 bands from across North America to perform at Chicago’s Symphony Hall.

First annual Grade 12 night in June.

2001-2002 Terrorism strikes in September and results in the cancellation of our plans for a U.S. Tour. Instead, the Grade 11/12 Concert Band makes a world tour of New Brunswick! We traveled to Moncton, Miramichi and Bathurst.
